With KIPO Cooperation, the UAE Launches an Industrial Property Automation System

After two years of development and customization, an industrial property automation system based on Korea’s technology was launched for full operation for the first time in the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Economy hosted a ceremony to announce the launch on February 28, 2018. Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) Commissioner Sung, Yunmo and UAE Minister of Economy Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori were in attendance.

 KIPO’s automation system technology will enable the entire process of UAE’s industrial property administration to be handled online, including patent and design application, examination, registration, and fees. Accordingly, UAE companies and individuals will have 24 hour access to online filing and fee payment and experience a significantly improved patent application process. The 2017 pilot system indicated a dramatically enhanced level of industrial property administration services by the UAE government, specifically a 95.6% online filing rate.

The operation of the system is expected to increase the industrial property administration efficiency of the UAE. Patent examinations, which were previously performed on paper, will be processed electronically, thereby reducing the examination processing period and efficiently managing examination history. Furthermore, industrial property information will be provided through online publications, making industrial property information easily accessible and available. As a result, an environment will be created where patent information can be widely utilized.

 Commissioner Sung remarked at the opening ceremony of the UAE industrial property automation system that he hopes for continued development of the UAE economy and future cooperation of the two countries to match the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
