ASEAN-KOREA Heads of IP Offices Meeting convenes in Seoul on November 25

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) hosts the ASEAN-KOREA
Heads of Intellectual Property (IP) Offices Meeting in Seoul on November 25
(Mon.) to 27 (Wed.). This is the first time for the leaders of IP offices of
ASEAN countries to gather together in Seoul to have a discussion dedicated to
IP issues.

This meeting coincides with the ASEAN ROK Commemorative Summit
which takes places in the same period in Busan to celebrate the 30 year long
dialogue relations between South Korea and ASEAN. KIPO explained that it
has decided on the slogan for the Heads of IP Offices Meeting Innovation
for Prosperity, Prosperity for People to resonate with the underlying spirit of
the Summit, and to best represent its willingness to contribute to the
realization of the current government’s New Southern Policy, with a par ticular
focus on the area of Intellectual Property.

The three day event will commence on November 25 with the official meeting
of the heads of the IP offices from Korea and ASEAN counties. At the meeting,
the high-level delegates will sit together to seek and discuss, under the
chairmanship of Commissioner of KIPO, potential cooperative activities for
creating competitive patents, implementing strong regional protection and
utilization of intellectual property and exploring other ways to promote co-prosperity.

On November 26, the KIPO-WIPO Appropriate Technology Grand Symposium will
be held with the presence of the heads of ASEAN IP offices, Deputy Director
General Mario Matus of Development Section of the World Intellectual Property
Office and more than 100 participants from academia and businesses. At the
symposium, achievements produced by KIPO over the past 10 years in developing
and distributing appropriate technologies, as well as an outlook for next years, will
be shared with the audience.

The Korea-ASEAN IP Transaction and Transfer Fair is slated for November 27, the
last day of the event. The fair will provide participants from businesses and IP
community from ASEAN countries or South Korea with an informative seminar
and business consultation on how to seek a transaction and transfer of technology
with companies from one another’s regions.

On the occasion of the Heads Meeting, Commissioner of KIPO Park Wonjoo will
have 10 separate meetings with each ASEAN member state to discuss an
implementation of country-specific cooperation and provision of customized
supports with an aim to help them expand their national IP capacity.

"ASEAN as a whole is an important IP trading partner to Korea. This meeting is
expected to further facilitate an IP-based economic cooperation between the two
regions," said KIPO Commissioner Park.
