WIPO Roving Webinar

- Introduction to WIPO international filing system and practical affairs including dispute resolution procedures -

the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner Yong Rae Kim) announced that the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO, Director General Daren Tang) held a [WIPO Roving Webinar] in cooperation with the Korea Patent Attorneys Association (KPAA, President Jang Won Hong) at the KPAA seminar hall from November 4th, Wednesday 3pm.

The agenda of this webinar is to introduce practical affairs of WIPO such as procedure method for international filing system to patent attorneys who work for international patent application on site.

Korean experts currently working for WIPO (Geneva, Switzerland) participated as lecturers and provided detailed information regarding filing systems including international patent (PCT), trademark (Madrid system), and design (Hague system), the role of data in digital economics, and "Global IP database" of WIPO for searching IP rights.
Patent attorneys who attended the webinar agreed that it is important to secure IP rights in advance and reduce administration risks in order for Korean business to successfully enter the international market, and said that the webinar was a good opportunity to have a better understanding of the international filing system of WIPO.

Meanwhile, the KIPO provides support for the expense for international filing of intellectual property rights of small·medium size enterprises which already advanced or plans to advance worldwide (2,516 cases in 2019 and about 3,500 cases in 2020), and also plans to open a WIPO local office so that applicants in Korea can consult about WIPO international filing service.

President Hong of the KPAA showed appreciation for the Korean experts of WIPO who provided detailed lectures of WIPO international filing system.

Director Yeon Woo Chung of the Intellectual Property Protection and International Cooperation Bureau of KIPO stated that "in current situation where it is difficult to predict global economic environment, it is necessary for our companies to secure and protect the rights of their core technologies to have competitiveness." He also added that "the KIPO and the KPAA will do our best to provide information useful for practical affairs related to international filings of IP rights to patent attorneys."
