KIPO spreads K-Intellectual Property to UAE and Brunei Darussalam
The Korean Intellectual Property Office(KIPO), headed by Commissioner KIM Wan Ki, has announced the successful completion of the 'Overseas IP Consulting Project', conducted for the past two years from 2023 to 2024 for intellectual property offices in the United Arab Emirates(UAE) and Brunei Darussalam.
The Overseas IP Consulting Project is carried out by an implementing organization selected by KIPO, and this time, the Korea Invention Promotion Association took the wheel. The project aims to establish strategic partnerships with key IP partner countries and pave the way for the dissemination of Korea's IP system, and its main content is to analyze the current status of IP-related laws, systems, and policies in the partner country and propose customized improvement recommendations.
For the UAE, the project focused on "Increasing the number of applications by small and medium-sized enterprises" and "Research on building infrastructure for invention education," and for Brunei, "Strategic Guidance for Intellectual Property Policy" and "Policy Recommendations on Human Resource Development for Intellectual Property." In addition, excerpts from Korea's invention education textbooks and invention practice kits (for teachers and students) were provided for use in their invention education.
In particular, in order to enhance the effectiveness of the 'building infrastructure for invention education' task tailored to the UAE's current situation, KIPO invited relevant officials to Korea to observe classes and experience the facilities of the Invention Specialized high schools, Gyeongju Invention Experience Education Center, and small and medium companies with excellent IP management practices.
Meanwhile, the consulting for Brunei on the development of intellectual property human resources produced positive results, helping the country to strengthen its own capabilities and make concrete steps to build up their patent examination system.
KIPO plans to diversify its cooperation with the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries and strengthen the cooperative relationship with ASEAN countries by hosting the ROK-ASEAN Heads of IP Offices Meeting this year in Korea. In addition, this year, KIPO will explore the possibility to conduct the project with countries in Central Asia and Africa, known as the major emerging markets, as part of efforts to expand the international cooperation for the sake of global applicants.
