KIPO Participated in 18th IP5 Heads of Office and Industry Meeting

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), led by Commissioner Wan Ki Kim, announced its participation in the 18th IP5 Heads of Office Meeting held on May 28 2025 (local time) in Tianjin, China.



Discussions at this year's meeting centered on the cooperative projects being carried out by the offices to enhance efficiency in patent administration and user convenience, as well as the implications of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies on the overall patent system. Notably, the offices showed a concrete action with respect to Global Assignment, a long-cherished wish for the IP5 Industry groups. In its presentation, KIPO presented a common request form prepared for the actual implementation of it.



In line with the strategic theme for this year "Promoting Utilization and Commercialization of IP to Effectively Support Innovative Development of the Economy," the IP5 offices and Industry exchanged their views on the incumbent policies and future areas of cooperation. KIPO introduced its effort to develop the IP finance in Korea which doubled in size from KRW 6 trillion at the end of 2021 to KRW 12 trillion by the end of 2025, and shared its support measures and best practices in the area of IP valuation and technology transfer.



Additionally, KIPO unveiled a report titled "The Role of Intellectual Property in Supporting SME Growth" which compiles IP5 offices' support policies, case studies, and statistical data related to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The information included in the report on fee reduction programs and tailored support measures across different growth stages of SMEs is expected to serve as a valuable resource for companies seeking to expand into global markets.



Commissioner Kim stated, "This year's meeting addressed practical issues that can directly benefit industry stakeholders. KIPO will continue to strengthen cooperation with our IP5 counterparts to build a global intellectual property ecosystem that supports industrial growth."
